our reader(s) has hopefully already thoroughly tooled thru the NYPL DIGITAL GALLERY. but, hey, i turned over some new-to-me soil when i stumped across Dinanda Nooney's '78-79 photographs of people in their Brooklyn home...1985 NYT sez: "'At Home in Brooklyn' consists of 80 photographs taken in 1978 and 1979 by Dinanda Nooney, who tactfully talked her way into 163 Brooklyn homes and recorded the exteriors and interiors and the family members living there." nice to look at, but dude below doesn't seem to be in his home!
[mota buena: mebbe i'll suck up the full NYT show review when i'm back at work?]
Today I had the pleasure of driving to R. Stevie Moore's home-based recording studio in Bloomfield, NJ with Aric Mayer. We traveled there to shoot photos of R. Stevie for his David Shrigley-conducted BOMB interview in the upcoming fall issue (#101). With a little luck, R. Stevie will be the cover! Although he has home-recorded over 400 (four-hundred) albums since the late 1960s, R. Stevie Moore has never been on a magazine cover. Before the trip this morning I shot these photo tests, incorporating homemade construction-paper lettering, with an eye toward shooting a text-inclusive cover portrait:
I was thrilled and relieved when R. Stevie let me tape the construction paper letters to his head. I can't wait to get the photos developed tomorrow. (Aric shot everything on actual film, so we've gotta get it processed.)
Big thanks to Nate('s blog) for leading me to R. Stevie — and his amazing YouTube videos — in the first place. Thank you, Nate.
LYRICS: Hey, be sad for yourself if you're sad for me 'cause I'm OK without it.
I like it when we're friends;
I think it's best when our friendship remains friendly.
I prefer when your pity doesn't become a problem like it did last week:
Weak pity, weak pity, weak weak pity.
I don't care what you think when you're crying for me,
'cause your tears invalidate the thought you have,
and invalidated thoughts don't count in my book.
I love you as long as you don't cause me problems.
I love you as long as I love you.
Hey, be sad etc.
it's summer. are you enjoying the possibly globally warmed-over weather in your hamlet/metroplex? i've been havin some hot n' humid, yet pleasant, times in my apartment: wearing meshy gym shorts, peacefully contemplating the rolling of sweat droplets...i'm rolling with the punches! i am resisting icy beverages out of semi-superstitious respect for Ancient Wisdom. also developing sugary-sweet respect for old but non-Ancient Eastern cooling beverages.
